what do we do?
Behavior Analysis is the science of learning and behavior. Behavior analysis helps us understand how behavior works, how behavior is affected by the environment, and how learning takes place. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) applies our understanding of how behavior works to real-life situations. ABA is a scientific approach that focuses on understanding and changing behavior. ABA therapy is considered an evidence-based best practice treatment by the US Surgeon General and by the American Psychological Association. “Evidence-based” means that ABA therapy has passed scientific tests of its usefulness, quality, safety, and effectiveness.
ABA is often used to help individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but can also be applied in various other contexts. Using ABA, behavior is carefully observed and analyzed to determine what causes it and how it can be modified, if needed. It uses techniques based on antecedent strategies, positive reinforcement and natural consequences to teach new skills. ABA breaks down complex tasks into smaller steps and uses repetition and practice to help individuals learn new skills. ABA therapy can help increase skills such as language and communication; attention, focus, and memory; social skills; self-care; motor skills; and learning and academics. It can also help decrease problematic behaviors which are unsafe, interfere with learning, limit access to natural reinforcement, or result in exclusion from your family’s desired environments. ABA therapy is a flexible treatment that is adapted to meet the needs of each unique person and can be provided in many different settings such as at home, at school, and in the community.
The goal of ABA therapy is to help individuals increase their independence and overall quality of life. Learn more here.
What is ABA therapy?
At A Village Behavior Services, we believe that learning can and should be fun! We implement a play-based, child-led, and age-appropriate approach to teaching. We have experience working with kids of all ages: Toddler to Teenager. We integrate your child’s interests, preferences, and choices into every session. We utilize antecedent strategies (i.e., breaking down tasks, visual supports, prompts/guidance, etc.) and positive reinforcement to increase your child’s productive, prosocial behavior and decrease their challenging or maladaptive behavior. We believe that, as a parent, you know your child best. We respect your unique parenting style, family values, and culture, and we take these factors into account when designing your child’s individualized goals and session plans. Best of all, we come to YOU! We’ll work with your family in your own home, school and community; so your child can learn, practice, and master their skills in real-life settings and situations.
